Adelaide Hills, South Australia

Adelaide Hills is "cool climate": the folds and undulations of the hills create a wide range of microclimates. This wine region is part of the Mount Lofty Ranges which has an altitude of 400 metres or more.

Features

  • 20 minutes southeast of Adelaide
  • approximately 30 wineries
  • wine grapes were first planted in the region in 1839
  • the vineyards in the region continue a tradition begun in 1845 when a hock from Echunga was the first Australian wine exported and drunk by Queen Victoria
  • coolest climate of all South Australian wine regions
  • lends itself to the production of cool climate varieties such as Pinot Noir

Coonawarra, South Australia

Coonawarra is famous for the "Terra Rossa" red-brown topsoil laid over a thin layer of calcrete (calcium carbonate) sitting on a white limestone base. This unique terroir is accepted as a major influence on the quality of the wine, along with the passion of Coonawarra winemakers.

  • about 4 hours drive, 380km south-east of Adelaide
  • Cabernet Sauvignon is the undoubted star of the region
  • the first vineyard was planted in the 1880s at Yallum
  • the founder was John Riddoch, who had come to Australia from Scotland during the Gold Rush
  • a map is almost unnecessary - Cellar Doors are very close to each other

Granite Belt, Queensland

Queensland's growing wine industry has over 100 vineyards. Some notable wines are produced in the high-altitude Granite Belt region in the state's extreme south. Many of the fifty plus wineries in the region have enjoyed significant success with Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay for some years.

  • 3 hours drive south-west of Brisbane
  • one of the highest grape-growing regions in Australia, with vineyards planted at over 1000 metres above sea level
  • the wine industry was pioneered by Italians and their descendants in the '20s. They produced wine for their own enjoyment and for sale to the Italian cane-growing communities to the north.
  • the modern era began in 1965 when Shiraz grapes were first planted.

Heathcote, Victoria

Heathcote, nestled between the Goulburn Valley and Bendigo, is a premium Shiraz-producing area. The region's ancient volcanic soils, known as Cambrian earth, are deep red, rich in minerals, and have good water-holding capacity.

  • about an hour and a half north of Melbourne, north of the Great Dividing Range
  • the first vines were planted by German immigrant, Henning Rathjen in the 1860s
  • the oldest Shiraz vines were planted in the late 1960s
  • many medal-winning wines produced here

King Valley, Victoria

The King Valley terrain is extremely varied, ranging from flat plains in the north to mountain sides in the south. So the range of grapes grown is very diverse - from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir used in sparkling wine, through Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet, Merlot, and new Italian varieties.

McLaren Vale, SA

John Reynell is usually credited with planting the first vines in 1838.

Mornington Peninsula, VIC

Red Hill, at the centre of Mornington Peninsula's wine region, is also a centre of specialty cheese-making, producing a range of varieties, many of which are designed to complement the region's wines.

  • a cool climate and fertile soils, the sea's moderating influence helps produce fresh, full-flavoured wines, reds, whites and sparkling

Riverina, New South Wales

The Riverina lies On the banks of the Murrumbidgee River in southern NSW. Centred on the rural city of Griffith, it is affectionately dubbed the "food bowl" of NSW. It produces a diversity of wines, because the soil and climatic conditions vary throughout the extent of the region. It is best known for botrytis-affected Semillon, but also produces Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet and more.

  • largest wine region in NSW
  • Riverina grapes account for over 15% of all wine produced in Australia
  • early Italian immigrants were a significant influence
  • established as an irrigation area in the early 1900's.
  • development of the wine industry was due to the McWilliams family who made fortified wines.

Riverland, South Australia

The Riverland region surrounds the River Murray from Blanchetown, through Renmark to the Victorian border. It produces nearly 60% of South Australia's grapes, which is almost 30% of Australia's grape production. Long sunshine hours and red-brown sandy loam soils ensure that fruit ripens fully.

  • wind along the Murray River, sampling wine and local produce - fruit, nuts, olives, and chocolates
  • sample local produce at the Riverland Farmers Market, every Saturday morning at Berri
  • modern viticulture techniques create naturally full-flavoured fruit-driven wines.

Victoria's first wine growing region, began in 1838 when The Ryrie Brothers planted Victoria's first vineyard at Yering Station.
